Design first
The Safe Place Bed originally started as a travel bed for children with additional needs.
Over time, more and more of our customers are using the Safe Place Bed as a permanent solution in the home. And being able to easily clean the Safe Place Bed became more important.
With that in mind, in 2024 we gathered years of data and updated the design of the Safe Place Bed, so that the inflatables sat inside a canvas cover, and that canvas cover could be easily cleaned.
A base protector will make your life easier
If you don’t already have one, please consider a washable base protector. They are sized to fit the base of the Safe Place Bed, made of a thick absorbent material with a waterproof backing. They can be washed and line dried / tumble-dried hundreds of times (up to 95C).
Although the canvas cover of the Safe Place Bed can be washed, it’s a LOT easier to chuck a base protector in the washing machine. And I’m all for an easy life.
Cleaning:
YouTube Resources:
1. Spot cleaning
Just a small mark or stain? Start by using a mild detergent and warm water. Allow the Safe Place Bed to dry thoroughly.
2. Washing machine
It’s easiest to watch the video, but in summary:
Remove everything from inside the bed (duvets, toys, base protectors, food, tech etc). You can wash these separately if required.
Remove inflatables.
Zip all 8 compartment zips closed and tuck all eight zipper heads into their pockets - this will stop the zip heads snagging the mesh during the wash cycle.
Assuming it's the INSIDE of your Safe Place Bed that is dirty, open one of the mesh doors and turn the Safe Place Bed inside out.
Zip both mesh doors closed and attach the zips to their zipper locks and tighten - again this will stop the zips snagging the mesh.
Wash at 30 degrees centigrade on a delicate cycle using mild detergent – no bleach or strong cleaning agents. I use laundry sanitiser instead of fabric conditioner, but this is personal choice.
Drying the cover of the Safe Place Bed
Line drying: The Safe Place Bed dries quickly on a washing line, so this is always my preferred option.
Tumble drying: If you have a tumble dryer and need to dry the cover quickly, or it’s lashing down with rain, then you can tumble dry the cover of the Safe Place Bed on a cool delicate cycle. The same principles of tucking zipper heads away and tightening the zipper lok to reduce snags applies.
Putting the Safe Place Bed back into use:
Turn the Safe Place Bed the right way round and re-insert the inflatables. Attach the straps and set the Safe Place Bed back up.
